The 200 acres of Colio Estate Vineyards are located at a latitude similar to Northern California and the Tuscany region in Italy.
The vine-friendly soils, the prevailing southwest winds and southern exposure to the lake were key factors in convincing the founders to build in the Essex/Pelee Island Coast wine region.
With one of the longest growing seasons in Canada, the premium vinifera varietals, particularly the reds, have more time to ripen on the vine.
While Colio Estate Wines consistently produces expressive, refreshing white wines from the vineyards planted with the likes of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling, it has built a reputation for big, varietally-sound red wines. The vineyards have extensive plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that continuously provide grapes of the highest quality.
